fattlabb \ fat ' lab n [E fatt , impeccable groove; labb from laboratory , place of experimentation] (2004): 1 music that transcends genres, blows wild and lush; 2 jazz-funk for the people ; 3 a Louisville, Kentucky-based quartet known for solid professionalism and experience; 4 a pie in the face of the traditional jazz community --Sampson's Dictionary of Music Crises and Histrionics, 3rd Edition Choose any or all of the definitions above. Fact is, fattlabb is a band that gets your attention and leaves you to digest the experience. Formerly known as Splatch, with two CDs, a batch of personnel changes, and nearly half a thousand live performances behind them, the original four members have reunited to take their art to the next level: more improvisation, more groove, more mixing of funk, rock, traditional jazz, and fusion. In short, more of what made them the premiere band of its kind in Louisville. The sound of fattlab cannot be described in terms of how similar or different it is to other performers. It is not too avant garde or so weird that it drives listeners’ ears away, but it can be described as something distinctive that must be experienced. With performances featuring the own compositions plus their renditions of jazz, funk, and rock classics, the music always comes off tight and polished with plenty of room for solos. The fattlabb lineup consists of two sons of a big-band musician (Tony and Pat McDaniel on trumpet and bass, respectively), a recording engineer and producer (Sam Gray on drums), and a veteran Louisville session man (Pete Petersen on keyboards) - four professionals who have been playing together for nearly a decade, in the various incarnations of Splatch and with other Louisville musicians. As fattlabb the band has revised some items from their Splatch catalog and added a delicious assortment of new tunes as well. The result? It's easy to hear or see for yourself.
